What can I teach?

Piano

I am very happy to teach classical piano to a wide variety of pupils from complete beginners to advanced pianists from age 5 upwards. I can help you to take ABRSM graded exams or explore classical piano repertoire and various other genres to enable you to be a well rounded musician and pianist.

Music Theory

I can also teach music theory up to ABRSM grade 5. I believe that it is important to have a good grasp of music theory to compliment good piano technique and musicality. I can also teach more advanced harmony on request.

Where do I teach?

I am based in North London (N15) and am able to teach at my studio where I have a grand and upright piano. Under certain circumstances I may be able to teach at the pupil's house.

My teaching experience and qualifications

I graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a BMus (Hons) where I studied piano under Dr. Stephen Savage. My classical piano repertoire is vast from Baroque to 20th Century so I am comfortable teaching and playing a wide variety of styles to an advanced level. Recent highlights include Brahms’s left-hand arrangement of Bach’s solo violin Chaconne, Beethoven’s Tempest Sonata, Mozart's Fantasy in C Minor, Berg Sonata and Shostakovich’s Prelude and Fugue in D minor.

My teaching experience consists of teaching primary, secondary school children and adults one to one. I currently work for Redbridge Music Service and teach at schools such as Woodford County High School, Trinity Catholic High School, Woodbridge High School, Christchurch Primary and Redbridge Music School. Depending on the individual I have helped them to achieve good results in the appropriate piano grades and/or learn pieces to a good standard. I have also helped prepare pupils for concerts such as a piano duet for RNCM Piano Day.

At university I undertook a pedagogy work placement as well as an Advanced Teaching skills placement which has helped me develop and reflect on my teaching style and colloborate with other teachers.

Rest assured, I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate that I can show on request. I am also a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM), the professional body for musicians in the UK, who I report to for safeguarding issues and provide me with public liability insurance.

I am also open to improving my skills and attend continuing professional development courses. Recent ones have included an European Piano Teacher's Assocation (EPTA) training day at Chetham's School of Music with speakers such as Paul Harris and one at St Paul's Girls School by Anthony Williams.

My teaching philosophy

I believe that piano tuition should be fun and enjoyable but also structured to ensure that my pupil has a solid foundation which they can build on and help them to become more independent on their musical journey.

I like to be flexible so that I can accommodate my pupils' needs as everyone is unique. I aim to support the pupil in their journey and help them achieve what they want out of playing the piano and music through setting short and long-term goals. I see empathy and being non-judgemental as one of my strong points which I use to try and understand where a pupil is coming from and to foster an open relationship where the pupil is able to be honest with me so that I can help them to achieve their potential. I admire curiosity and eagerness and am willing to answer all questions.

I like to also develop the musicianship of the pupil and their music theory. I use games or other creative methods to explain concepts to further reinforce what I have been teaching. I particularly enjoy helping a pupil gain confidence and watching them grow as a musician and pianist.

Piano technique is also important as we do need our body to play the piano. Improving technique helps the pupil play better but also interacts with their musicality and will therefore lift their piano playing to higher levels.

As a musician we will have to perform at some point whether that be on stage or in an exam. I like to equip my pupils with performance skills so that they feel ready to perform and are able to manage performance anxiety.

Overall, I strive to create a balance between musicality and piano technique and help the pupil become proficient in various musical styles.
